Charles Busch will star alongside Alison Fraser, Julie Halston, Amy Rutberg, Jennifer Van Dyck, and Jonathan Walker in an Off-Broadway run of his new play, The Divine Sister. Carl Andress will direct the production, which will play the SoHo Playhouse (15 Vandam Street), beginning September 12 with an official opening on September 22.

Billed as “an outrageous comic homage to nearly every Hollywood film involving nuns,” the show was seen earlier this year in a developmental production at Theatre for the New City, with the same cast.

The play tells the story of St. Veronica’s indomitable Mother Superior (Busch) who is determined to build a new school for her Pittsburgh convent. Along the way, she has to deal with a young postulant who is experiencing “visions,” sexual hysteria among her nuns, a sensitive schoolboy in need of mentoring, a mysterious nun visiting from the Mother House in Berlin, and a former suitor intent on luring her away from her vows.

The original creative team from the TNC run included: scenic and graphic design by B.T. Whitehill, costume design by Fabio Toblini, lightingdesign by Kirk Bookman, sound design by Jill BC DuBoff, wig design by Katherine Carr, and original music by Lewis Flinn. All are expected to return for the upcoming production.

Busch is the author and star of such plays as The Lady in Question, Red Scare on Sunset, Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, The Third Story, and Die, Mommie, Die! His Broadway play The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife won the Outer Circle Critics’ John Gassner Award, and received a Tony nomination for Best Play. He is also the recipient of a 2003 special Drama Desk Award for career achievement.
