Dawn Upshaw will star in the U.S premiere of Kiaja Saariho and Amin Maalouf’s oratorio La Passion De Simone, to be presented on August 13, 15, and 17 at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall as part of this year’s Mostly Mozart Festival.
The production will be directed by Peter Sellars, and feature the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Susanna Mälkki.

Using the form of a “Passion play,” the oratorio explores the life of the controversial French philosopher and mathematician Simone Weil, who starved herself to death at the age of 34 because she refused to eat more than her countrymen in Nazi-occupied France.

The show will also feature the London Voices and dancer Michael Schumacher; the creative team includes Martin Pakledinaz (costumes) and James F. Ingalls (lighting).
