The Women’s Project has announced selections for its 31st season, dedicated to providing a stage for women who create theater.

The season will begin with Saviana Stanescu’s Aliens with Extraordinary Skills (September 22-October 26), a world premiere dark comedy about a clown from the unhappiest country in the world, Moldova, who pins her hopes on a US work visa by creating balloon animals. Tea Alagic will direct a cast that will include Shirine Babb, Seth Fisher, Gian-Murray Gianino, Kevin Isola, Natalia Payne and Jessica Pimentel. The creative team will include Kris Stone (sets), Jen Moeller (costumes), Gina Scherr (lights), and Sarah Pickett (sound & original music).

Next up, Anne Bogart will direct Virginia Woolf’s Freshwater (January 15-February 15), in a co-production with SITI Company. This 1923 work, revised in 1935, is the only play written by Woolf, and has never been produced professionally in the United States. It creates a deliberately witty and wacky universe peopled with a tribe of artists, friends and lovers in a playful mood. The cast will include Akiko Aizara, Will Bond, Ellen Lauren, Kelly Maurer, Barney O’Hanlon, and Stephen Webber. The creative team will include James Schuette (sets & costumes), Brian Scott (lights), and Darron L. West (sound).

Women’s Project will present a site-specific production in May 2009 entitled Global Cooling: The Women Chill at an indoor public space to be announced. In addition, the company will present a spring Hothouse workshop production, and is planning one-night-only concerts and special events all season long.
