Christopher, Desai, Ralston, Rodriguez, et al. Set for York’s Bajour

Initial casting has been announced for Bajour, which will be presented July 13-15 as part of the York Theatre Company’s Musicals in Mufti series. The show will be directed by Stuart Ross, with musical direction by Mark Hartman.

The show will feature Talia Barzilay (Ensemble), Thom Christopher (Johnny), Angel Desai (Emily), Erick Devine (Ensemble), Michael Iannucci. (Ensemble), Don Mayo (Newark), Nancy McCall (Ensemble), Teri Ralston (Momma), Nicholas Rodriguez (Steve/Ensemble), and Deone Zanotto (Anyanka). Additional casting will be announced shortly.

The musical, which has a book by Ernest Kinoy and music and lyrics by Walter Marks, concerns an NYU anthropology student whose doctoral study of nomadic gypsies brings her in contact with a tribal leader who needs to raise a dowry to purchase a bride from Newark’s Gypsy King for his son.

The original 1964 Broadway production, directed by Lawrence Kasha and choreographed by Peter Gennaro, ran for 232 performances. The cast included Nancy Dussault, Herschel Bernardi, Chita Rivera, Mae Questel, Paul Sorvino, Michael Bennett, and Leland Palmer.

The Mufti season will conclude The Day Before Spring, co-written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. The musical, which will be directed by David Glenn Armstrong, is about a married woman who considers running off with her old flame after they meet again at a college reunion. It will run July 27-29.
