A.R.T Awards $150,000 to 37 NYC Theaters; Epps Receives Irvine Award

The JPMorgan Chase Fund for Small Theatres, a project of A.R.T./New York, has awarded a total of $150,000 to 37 New York City theaters. Grants of between $2,000 and $7,500 are given to companies with annual operating budgets between $100,000 and $500,000.

Among the recipients were AMAS Musical Theatre, The Civilians, Clubbed Thumb, Emerging Arts Theatre, Keen Theatre Company, Our Time Theatre, Page Seventy-Three Productions, The Play Company, Prospect Theatre, Rattlestick, Red Bull Theater, Soho Repertory, Target Margin, Teatro Circulo, Transport Group, and Vital Theatre.

In related news, on Monday, July 16, the James Irvine Foundation announced it was giving one of its 2007 Leadership Awards to Sheldon Epps, artistic director of the Pasadena Playhouse, for his commitment to diversity and programs that expose disadvantaged youth to theater. The award comes with a $125,000 grant.

The same day, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation announced the approval of $4.1 million in grants to New Jersey arts organizations. Among the recipients were Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey ($175,000), the George Street Playhouse ($170,000), New Jersey Theatre Alliance ($75,000), New Jersey Performing Arts Center ($75,000), New Jersey Opera Theatre ($30,000), and the Dreamcatcher Repertory Company ($7,500).
