The Atlantic Theater Company has announced that its hit Off-Broadway musical Spring Awakening will move to Broadway, though no decisions have yet been made as to casting, dates, or venue. Joining the Atlantic to produce the show for its transfer will be Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman; the latter’s longtime producing partner, Emanuel Azenberg, will serve as general manager.

Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play about teenagers coming of age in Germany, Spring Awakening has music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The show is directed by Michael Mayer and features choreography by Bill T. Jones. The cast of the Off-Broadway production is led by Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, and John Gallagher, Jr.

Speaking on behalf of the producing team, Pittelman said: “We’re really pleased that this exciting and unique production will now reach a much wider audience. Duncan, Steven, and Michael have created a musical experience that’s very special, and we are proud that this new work is on its way to Broadway.”

In related news, there will be special “talk backs” immediately following the last three Saturday matinees of the show’s run at the Atlantic. On July 22, the guest will be author Judith Levine; on July 29, actor/writer James Lescene, who won an Academy Award for his short film Trevor, will appear; and on August 5, the guest will be playwright/performer Eve Ensler, known for The Vagina Monologues and The Good Body.
