Plays by Butterworth, Howe, Mamet Chosen for Atlantic Theater’s 2006-2007 Season

Plays by Jez Butterworth, Tina Howe, and David Mamet will be part of the Atlantic Theater Company’s 2006-2007 mainstage season.

The company will present the New York premiere of Howe’s Birth and After Birth, directed by Christian Parker, September 13-October 29. In this work by the author of Painting Churches and Coastal Disturbance, a couple’s hopes of maintaining the image of a perfect, blissful family are dashed when their four-year-old son’s behavior goes out of control on his birthday.

Next up will be the New York premiere of Mamet’s adaptation of Harley Granville-Barker’s The Voysey Inheritance, November 15-January 7. Originally produced in 1905, the play focuses on what happens when the members of an upper middle-class family disover that their patriarch has amassed the family fortune by embezzling money from his clients. No director has been named for this production. Mamet is the co-founder of the Atlantic and the author of such works as American Buffalo, Glengarry Glen Ross, Romance, and Edmond (the film version of which is currently in release).

The season will continue with the world premiere of Butterworth’s Parlour Song, directed by the the Atlantic’s artistic director, Neil Pepe. The play is about a demolitions expert who suspects that his wife is stealing from him. The Atlantic has previously produced Butterworth’s Mojo and The Night Heron.
