Jackman, Close, Goldberg, Danner, et. al, Gain Emmy Nominations

This year’s nominations for the 57th Annual Emmy Awards, which were announced this morning, rewarded over a dozen Tony Award winners, along with a host of Broadway actors and theater-related programming.

Topping the list is Tony winner Blythe Danner, who earned three nominations: Outstanding Actress in a Movie or Miniseries for Back When We Were Grownups, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama for Huff, and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy for Will & Grace.

Other former Tony winners competing for Emmys are Hugh Jackman, for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Music, Comedy or Variety Show for hosting the 58th Annual Tony Awards, Brian Dennehy and Christopher Plummer for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for Our Fathers, Victor Garber for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy for Will & Grace, and Charles Durning for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama for NCIS.

On the distaff side, Emmy nods were given to Tony winners Glenn Close for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for The Shield, Tyne Daly for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama for Judging Amy, Stockard Channing for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama for The West Wing, and Swoosie Kurtz for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama for Huff.

Other female Tony winners who were nominated are Amanda Plummer for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Angela Lansbury for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Jane Alexander for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for Warm Springs, and Whoopi Goldberg for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Music, Comedy or Variety Show for the HBO presentation of her recent Broadway solo show.

In addition, theater favorites who gained Emmy nominations include Glengarry Glen Ross co-stars Alan Alda and Jeffrey Tambor, Spamalot star Hank Azaria, Pillowman star Jeff Goldblum, and Birdie Blue star S. Epatha Merkerson. Also competing for the gold statuette are: Kathy Bates, Jill Clayburgh, Cynthia Nixon, Ed Harris, Frances Conroy, William H. Macy, Felicity Huffman, Kenneth Branagh, Bobby Cannavale, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Megan Mullally, Alec Baldwin, Jeremy Piven, and Ray Liotta, as well as legendary acting couple Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward (for their roles in the HBO miniseries Empire Falls), and the late Ossie Davis (for his work on the Showtime series The L Word).

Theater-related programming that will be competing for top Emmy honors includes the 58th Annual Tony Awards telecast, the HBO film of Lackawanna Blues, the Lincoln Center concert version of Candide (filmed for PBS’ Great Performances series), the Lincoln Center production of Passion, and the PBS miniseries Broadway: The Amerian Musical.
