Eden Espinosa will play Elphaba in the San Francisco engagement of the national tour of Wicked, August 5-September 11 at the Orpheum Theater.

Espinosa will temporarily replace Stephanie J. Block, who is now playing the role on a limited schedule in Los Angeles. Block suffered a serious injury shortly before the tour began earlier this year in Toronto, and has told fans that she is under doctor’s orders to take some time off this summer. She is expected to rejoin the tour in Denver on September 16.

Espinosa was the standby for the role of Elphaba in the show’s Broadway production, going on for star Idina Menzel on numerous occasions. She was most recently seen in the starring role of Brooklyn: The Musical.

The national tour of Wicked features Kendra Kassebaum (Glinda), Derrick Williams (Fiyero), Carol Kane (Madame Morrible), David Garrison (The Wizard), Jenna Leigh Green (Nessarose), Logan Lipton (Boq), and Timothy Britten Parker (Dr. Dillamond), The tour is currently set to continue through September 2006, making stops in nearly 20 cities, including Houston, Washington D.C, Philadelphia, Boston, and San Diego.

A separate “sit-down” production of the musical opens tonight in Chicago with former Saturday Night Live star Ana Gasteyer as Elphaba.
