Syracuse University to Offer Master’s Degree in Arts Journalism

Spearheaded by the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and directed by Johanna Keller, the program will begin in 2005 and will comprise an intensive 12-month curriculum with concentrations in architecture, film, fine arts, music, and theater. Its mission is to investigate the role of arts journalism in the media, the relationship between criticism and the arts, and the connection between the arts and mass culture. The faculty for 2005-2006 is scheduled to include Tim Griffin (Art Forum), Robert Ivy Jr. (Architectural Record), Margo Jefferson (The New York Times), Alex Ross (The New Yorker), and David Sterritt (Christian Science Monitor). Additional faculty members will be announced soon.

The program will host a national symposium entitled “Writing About the Arts: The Critics, Craft & Education,” November 19-20, 2004 on the Syracuse University Campus. The symposium will involve nationally known writers and artists and will feature a keynote speech by the chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Dana Gioia. Prospective students and the public are invited.
