Judson House Bows Out with Its Final Performance Event
From Thursday, July 27 until Sunday, July 30, Peculiar Works Project will present The Judson House Project, a multi-disciplinary art and performance event that celebrates the groundbreaking work and heritage of Greenwich Village’s famed Judson House.
A home and workplace to avant-garde artists since the 1950s, Judson House has nurtured talents such as Claes Oldenberg, Trisha Brown, Yoko Ono, and Maria Irene Fornes. In honor of these artists and the countless others who have benefited from the sponsorship of Judson House, Peculiar Works Project, known for creating site-specific performance art, is presenting an event that consists of nine performance and installation works in different spaces throughout Judson House. The audience is taken on a tour through the House, where they watch the performance, as well as linking vignettes between each piece.
The artists who have been commissioned for this event include Chris Burney, Laurel Jay Carpenter, Yanira Castro, Nancy S. Chu, S.M. Dale, Steven Dean, Diane Dwyer, Funkopolis, and Renee Philippi. They come from the fields of theater, dance, performance and installation art, and they have created contemporary pieces that are not only tributes to the work of Judson “alumni,” but are also reflections on the social and political history of the area.
After a hundred years of service to the public and the artists of New York City, Judson House will be demolished on August 1st. This weekend is the last opportunity to celebrate its rich history by experiencing The Judson House Project.
