Huntington Theatre Company's production of Todd Kreidler's stage adaptation of William Rose's screenplay Guess Who's Coming to Dinner will star Malcolm-Jamal Warner in the central role of Dr. John Prentice. Warner will reprise the role that he originated at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. The comedy drama, directed by David Esbjornson, runs September 5-October 5.
The original 1967 film version of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, which starred Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy, follows the Draytons, a liberal, upper-class white family, through one tumultuous day. When the Draytons' daughter, Joanna, announces to her parents that she plans to marry an accomplished African-American doctor, racial tensions end up being a larger problem than they all anticipated.
Kreidler's play adaptation, directed by Esbjornson, ran at Arena Stage in late 2013. The full company, along with Warner, included Bethany Anne Lind as Joanna Drayton, Tom Key as Matt Drayton, Tess Malis Kincaid as Christina Drayton, Michael Russotto as Monsignor Ryan, Eugene Lee as John Prentice Sr., Andrea Frye as Mary Prentice, Valerie Leonard as Hilary St. George, and Lynda Gravátt as Matilda Banks.
Full casting and members of the creative team for the Huntington bow will be announced in the coming months.
