High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens and a host of stage veterans are set to take part in a reading of the Broadway-bound revival of Gigi, according to an invitation sent around to theater-industry insiders. Eric Schaeffer, who will helm the musical's pre-Broadway engagement at The Kennedy Center in January 2015, directs the reading.
Joining Hudgens will be Tony winner Victoria Clark (Cinderella), Tony nominees Howard McGillin (The Phantom of the Opera) and Kate Burton (Grey's Anatomy), Corey Cott (Newsies), and Steffanie Leigh (Mary Poppins). This ensemble does not reflect the casting for the Kennedy Center or Broadway productions.
Based on the 1944 novella by Colette, Gigi follows the romance between a wealthy playboy and a young courtesan. Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's Paris-set musical has been revised for this revival by Heidi Thomas, the screenwriter behind the television series' Call the Midwife and the 2010 edition of Upstairs, Downstairs. Joshua Bergasse choreographs Schaeffer's production and the reading, both of which are produced by Jenna Segal.
A Broadway timeline for Gigi has not yet been announced.
