Tony winner Terrence McNally's play Mothers and Sons will end its Broadway run on June 22 after 33 previews and 104 performances. The production, which opened March 24 at the John Golden Theatre, is directed by Sheryl Kaller.
Mothers and Sons stars Bobby Steggert, Frederick Weller, and Tyne Daly. In the play Katharine (Daly), still stricken with grief over her son's AIDS-related death 20 years earlier, makes a surprise visit to the home of her son's ex-lover, Cal (Weller). Cal is now a successful money manager living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with his husband, Will (Steggert), and their son, Bud (Grayson Taylor). Confronted with the richness of Cal's life in a much-changed America, Katharine is forced to come to terms with the seeming injustice of her son's premature death.
The production was nominated for a 2014 Tony Award for Best Play, and Tyne Daly was nominated for both a Tony and a Drama Desk for her performance as Katherine. Mothers and Sons is McNally's 20th Broadway production.
