Will Tupac Shakur Musical Holler If Ya Hear Me Reach Broadway?

A developmental workshop of the new non-bio-musical is currently underway.

Holler If Ya Hear Me, a new musical inspired by the songs of groundbreaking rap artist Tupac Shakur, might be headed to Broadway in the 2013-2014 season. A developmental workshop for the piece, directed by Kenny Leon, is currently underway in New York City, and the work will make a planned move to the Great White Way if an appropriate theater is found.

Featuring a book by Todd Kreidler, the dramaturg for the recent August Wilson plays Radio Golf and Gem of the Ocean, Holler If Ya Hear Me uses Shakur’s songs to tell the story of two childhood friends and their families as they struggle to achieve their hopes and dreams in a midwestern industrial city.

The production features choreography by Wayne Cilento, scenic and video design by David Gallo, costume design by Reggie Ray, and lighting by Mike Baldassari. Producers include Afeni Shakur, Eric L. Gold, Chunsoo Shin, and Jessica Green.

The voice of a generation, Tupac Shakur has sold over 75 million albums worldwide. They include Me Against the World, All Eyez on Me, and 2Pacalypse Now. Shakur was murdered in a drive-by shooting on September 7, 1996.
