Deborah Cox and Constantine Maroulis, who will co-star in the upcoming Broadway production of Jekyll & Hyde, hosted the fourth annual National High School Musical Theater Awards, presented at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre on Monday, June 25. A post-performance party was held at John’s Pizzeria.
The evening’s winners were Elizabeth Romero, representing Huntington Beach High School Academy for the Performing Arts in California, and Joshua Grosso, of American Heritage School in Tampa. Romeo won for her performance as Lola in Damn Yankees; Grosso for his work as Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera. The awards came with a $10,000 scholarship and the “Jimmy” Award, named for producer James M. Nederlander.
Guests at the event included Nederlander and his son, James L. Nederlander, as well as Rick Elice, Montego Glover, Leslie Odom, Jr., Roger Rees, Krysta Rodriguez, and Frank Wildhorn.
The awards will also be the subject of the upcoming PBS documentary, Broadway or Bust , premiering in September.
The winners were chosen by a panel of industry experts including Scott Ellis (Roundabout Theatre Company); Kent Gash (New Studio on Broadway, NYU Tisch School of the Arts Department of Drama); Tony Award-nominee Montego Glover (Memphis); Rachel Hoffman (Telsey + Company); Alecia Parker (NAMCO); Nick Scandalios (Nederlander Organization) and Bernie Telsey (Telsey + Company and MCC Theater).
