The Public Theater has announced post-show discussions for Suzan-Lori Parks’ Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 8, & 9), following select performances.

The multimedia work is about slavery, war, and freedom. Part I tells the story of Penny, a slave who is awaiting her husband’s return from the Civil War while resisting her own desire to flee with a group of runaway slaves; while Parts 8 and 9, set in the present day, follow a Poet-General struggling with the reality of his impending death. Jo Bonney directs a cast that includes the playwright, as well Nicole Beharie, Seth Gilliam, Patrice Johnson, James McDaniel, Joan MacIntosh, Lucas Papaelias, and Frederick Weller.

Parks will appear in conversation with Glenda Carpio (Associate Professor of African and African American Studies and English at Harvard University and author of Laughing Fit to Kill: Black Humor in the Fictions of Slavery), on June 16 following the 7pm performance.

On June 23, following the 7 pm performance, Parks will also appear with cast members from the play, and Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis.
