Sam Robards will take over the role of Richard Hannay in the Broadway production of The 39 Steps on July 8. He replaces original star Charles Edwards.

Directed by Maria Aitken, the play is a comedic take on Hitchcock’s 1935 classic thriller of the same name about a man who is forced by a mysterious woman’s death into a cross-country race for his life. The play is adapted by Patrick Barlow, based on an original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon and on the book by John Buchan. The play won the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, and is nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Play.

The cast also includes Arnie Burton, Jennifer Ferrin, and Cliff Saunders. The creative team includes Peter McKintosh (sets and costumes), Kevin Adams (lighting), and Mic Pool (sound).

Robards made his Broadway debut as Gustav Eberson in the Roundabout’s revival of Arthur Miller’s The Man Who Had All The Luck, for which he received a Tony Award nomination, and most recently starred in the Roundabout’s production of The Overwhelming.
