Glimmerglass Opera Announces 2009 Season

Glimmerglas Opera has announced its selections for its 2009 season, July 18-August 25.

It will include Jonathan Miller’s production of Verdi’s La Traviata, starring Mary Dunleavy and Malcolm McKenzie; Kevin Newbury’s production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola, starring Julie Boulianne, John Tessier, and Keith Phares; Sam Helfrich’s production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Consul, starring Michael Chioldi, Joyce Castle, Leah Wood, and John Easterlin; and Miller’s concert performances of Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas starring an all-female cast, led by Tamara Mumford and Joelle Harvey.

The 2008 season will include Glimmerglass Opera’s production of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate, to run in repertory, July 5-August 23. The production will be directed by Diane Paulus, with choreography by Darren Lee and the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra conducted by David Charles Abell.

The show will star Lisa Vroman (Lili/Kate), Brad Little (Fred/Petruchio), David Larsen (Bill/Lucentio), and Courtney Romano (Lois/Bianca). The cast will also feature Damian Norfleet, Michael Mott, Brad Nacht, Martin C. Hurt, and T.K. Durham. The creative team will feature John Conklin (sets), Anika Lupes (costumes), and Jane Cox (lighting).

The Glimmerglass 2008 season will feature three other productions with links to Shakespeare: Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto, and Wagner’s Das Liebesverbot. In addition, the company will present two concert performances of Felix Mendelssohn’s complete incidental music to A Midsummer’s Night Dream.
