Spring Awakening and Utopia Are Among Best Plays of 2006-2007

The selections for the Best Plays of 2006-2007 were announced today by series editor Jeffrey Eric Jenkins. The book of the same name will be published by Limelight Editions in 2008.

In alphabetical order, the plays are Blackbird by David Harrower, The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl, The Coast of Utopia by Tom Stoppard, Dying City by Christopher Shinn, Frost/Nixon by Peter Morgan, The Pain and the Itch by Bruce Norris, Passing Strange by Stew and Heidi Rodewald, Radio Golf by August Wilson, The Scene by Theresa Rebeck, and Spring Awakening by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik.

Essays on those plays will be written, respectively, by David Cote, Anne Marie Welsh, Charles Wright, Charles Isherwood, Charles McNulty, John Istel, Alisa Solomon, Christopher Rawson, Chris Jones, and Michael Feingold.

The plays were chosen from productions of new plays that opened between June 1, 2006 and May 31, 2007. The choices were made by the editor after consultation with the Best Plays Theater Yearbook editorial board, which includes Tish Dace, Christine Dolen, Sylviane Gold, Robert Hurwitt, John Istel, Chris Jones, Charles McNulty, Julius Novick, Christopher Rawson, Alisa Solomon, Jeffrey Sweet, Anne Marie Welsh, Linda Winer, and Charles Wright. Robert Brustein is consulting editor to the series.
