The Epic Theatre Company’s production of Nilaja Sun’s critically acclaimed solo show No Child will begin an Off-Broadway run at the Barrow Street Theatre on July 8, with an official opening on July 16. Tickets are currently on sale through September 3. The show, directed by Hal Brooks, first opened on May 10 at the Beckett Theater and closed on June 18.

The show is based on Sun’s own experience as a “teaching artist” in the New York City school system, whose job is to introduce her students to the play Our Country’s Good. In it, she portrays an amazing array of characters, including an elderly school custodian, an overwhelmed Asian-American teacher, a beleaguered Latina mother, and an entire classroom of Bronx 10th graders who are considered the worst kids in the entire system.

In their TheaterMania review, Barbara and Scott Siegel wrote: “Sun has created for herself an acting vehicle that is monumental. In fact, she’s the first performer we have seen whom we would favorably compare to John Leguizamo; that’s how gifted, fierce, and astonishing she is.”
