Lord of the Rings Tops Toronto’s Dora Awards

The Lord of the Rings, the megamusical adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels, was the big winner at this year’s Dora Mavor Moore Awards, celebrating excellence in Toronto Theatre, which were presented on June 26.

The show won seven awards in the General Theatre Division, including Outstanding New Musical, Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Director of a Musical (Matthew Warchus), and Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role (Michael Therriault). The Lord of the Rings will complete its Toronto engagement on September 3 after a 31-week run. A new production will open at London’s Drury Lane Theatre in June, 2007.

Other shows that picked up multiple Dora awards included The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, Bombay Black, blood..claat — one womban story, and Wrecked. Director Jennifer Tarver received the 2006 Pauline McGibbon Award, and BoyGroove won the inaugural Audience Choice Award for Outstanding Production.
