Zhivago, a musical adaptation of the Boris Pasternak novel Dr. Zhivago, will be the first musical presented as part of the La Jolla Playhouse’s four-year-old “Page to Stage” program.

The show will run July 26-August 21 in a production with minimal costumes and sets; it will be directed by Tony Award winner Des McAnuff, La Jolla’s artistic director. Zhivago has a book by playwright Michael Weller (Moonchildren), music by Lucy Simon (The Secret Garden), and lyrics by Michael Korie (Doll) and Amy Powers (Sunset Boulevard). Anthony Crivello, who won a Tony Award for his role as Valentin in Kiss of the Spiderwoman, will head a cast including Jessica Burrows, Chris Hoch, David McDonald, and Rena Strober.

Another “Page to Stage” workshop production, Current Nobody — a contemporary adaptation of The Odyssey by award-winning playwright Melissa James Gibson — will run July 26-31. Among the most notable of previous “Page to Stage” productions were I Am My Own Wife and 700 Sundays.
