Talkin’ Broadway Establishes Summer Theatre Festival Citations

The website TalkinBroadway.com announced today that it will honor new plays and musicals through the first ever Talkin’ Broadway Summer Theatre Festival Citations. These citations are designed to acknowledge the growing role of Off-Off-Broadway summer festivals in launching new theater works, and to honor individual productions and performers of demonstrated excellence.

The panel of jurors for the citations includes Matthew Murray, chief New York theater critic for Talkin’ Broadway; Dan Bacalzo, managing editor of TheaterMania.com; Peter Filichia, a TheaterMania.com columnist and theater critic for the Newark Star-Ledger; Andy Propst, editor/founder of AmericanTheaterWeb.com; and Linda Tullberg, management consultant and Talkin’ Broadway staff member.

Candidates for festival citations include but are not limited to eligible productions in Off-Off-Broadway festivals with public performances between July 1 and October 2. This encompasses entries in the Fresh Fruit Festival (July 11-31); The Ice Factory (July 6-August 13); the Midtown International Theatre Festival (July 18-August 7); the New York International Fringe Festival (August 12-28); and the New York Musical Theatre Festival (September 12-October 2).

Each juror will award a citation in each of five categories:

1. Outstanding New Play

2. Outstanding New Musical

3. Outstanding Actor (Male)

4. Outstanding Actor (Female)

5. “Wild Card” (covering shows/performances that don’t easily fit in any other category.)

The Talkin’ Broadway Summer Theatre Festival Citations will be awarded at the end of the evaluation period, during the second week in October. The winners will be recognized on a permanent awards page on the Talkin’ Broadway web site. For more information, visit www.talkinbroadway.com.
