It has just been announced that La Cage aux Folles, the 2005 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival, will play its final performance on Sunday, June 26 at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre (1535 Broadway at 46th Street).

“I am so proud of this wonderful production,” said producer James L. Nederlander. “Unfortunately, despite winning the Tony Award on Sunday, our sales have not increased. We’ve decided to set the closing date for June 26 to give theatergoers a window of opportunity to see this beautiful show.”

In his review of the production for TheaterMania, David Finkle wrote: “Even if La Cage aux Folles was always pretty much an enterprise geared to appeal to the tired businessman and -woman, that doesn’t mean that such patrons should be served a tired show. In this production, yesteryear’s mascara is running.”

La Cage aux Folles has a score by Jerry Herman and a book by Harvey Fierstein. The revival, directed by Jerry Zaks and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell (2005 Tony Award for Best Choreography), will have played 30 previews and 229 regular performances at the time of its closing. The cast is currently headed by Robert Goulet and Gary Beach.
