Broadway Production of The Mambo Kings Canceled

Producers Daryl Roth and Jordan Roth announced today that the planned Broadway production of the new musical The Mambo Kings has been canceled. The show had been scheduled to begin perfomances at the Broadway Theatre on July 20 and to open on August 18.

Based on Oscar Hijeulos’ Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Mambo Kings has a score by Arne Glimcher and Carlos Franzetti. The show opened last month in San Francisco to mixed-to-negative reviews, with Glimcher directing a cast headed by Jamie Camil, Esai Morales, David Alan Grier, Albita, Justina Machado, and Christiane Noll. It was recently reported that such theater notables as Tommy Tune, Jerry Mitchell, David Ives, and Jason Robert Brown had been approached to “doctor” the show.

“We are deeply grateful for the amazing dedication and remarkable spirit of the entire cast, crew and creative team of The Mambo Kings,” stated the Roths. “While we had pursued several incredibly talented people to join the team and help us realize the full potential of the show, it became apparent to us all that the production could not successfully go forward on the current schedule.”
