On Monday, June 7, some amazing people gathered at Sardi’s to celebrate the premiere of Rick McKay’s teriffic new documentary film Broadway: The Golden Age. Among them were performer-director-choreographer Tommy Tune and stage and film star Jane Powell…
Ben Gazzara, who appears in the film in archival footage of a scene from the original Broadway production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, in which he played Brick and Barbara Bel Geddes played Maggie…
…Lainie Kazan (Funny Girl, My Favorite Year) with entertainment lawyer Mark Sendroff…
…Tammy Grimes (The Unsinkable Molly Brown, 42nd Street) with Joel Vig (Ruthless!, Hairspray)…
…the legendary Fay Wray, who appeared on Broadway before and after attaining screen immortality in King Kong (1933)…
…and, left to right: film critic Joel Siegel, Michele Lee (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Bravo, Giovanni!, Seesaw, The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife), Rick McKay, and Jamie de Roy (one of the producers of Broadway: The Golden Age).
The weather on Sunday, June 6 was rather pissy, to be blunt, but that didn’t stop a whole lot of folks from turning out for the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce’s 2nd Avenue Community Benefit Street Fair. Getta load of the crowd!
At the fair, this adorable baby found her own source of sunshine.
For the first time in the fair’s 27-year history, an entire block was dedicated to theater; more than 40 shows and organizations were represented, including Wicked, The Producers, Hairspray, Stomp, The Public Theater, and the Jean Cocteau Rep. Also among the participants on the TheaterMania Block were Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding…
…The Dodgers’ Fame, 42nd Street, and Dracula…
…and Todd Robbins’s Carnival Knowledge.
Here are two folks from the Vineyard Theatre, whence came the Broadway hit Avenue Q. About 12 hours after this photo was taken, these people were bouncing off the walls as Avenue Q won multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical of 2003-2004.
One of the fair’s most popular attractions was Little Shop of Horrors‘ Audrey II, who put the bite on several passersby.
And here, manning one of the two TheaterMania booths that were set up between 83rd and 84th streets, is TM’s own John Issendorf.
