Tony Award winner Ron Rifkin will step into the role of Isaac Geldhart for five performances of the current Second Stage Theatre production of Jon Robin Baitz's The Substance of Fire. Rifkin performed the role in the original 1991 off-Broadway production at Playwrights Horizons, which earned him the Obie, Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, and Drama-Logue Awards.

Rifkin has volunteered to take over the role from May 20-23 for John Noble, who encountered an unanticipated conflict with the filming schedule for his Fox series Sleepy Hollow. Noble will return to the production for the final weekend of performances, May 24-25.

On Friday evening, Rifkin attended a performance of The Substance of Fire, and after learning of Noble's scheduling conflict, he volunteered to step in on short notice. "Despite his reputation, I have always found Isaac Geldhart fascinating company and I am more than happy to have the chance to spend more time with him, especially in such a spectacular production," Rifkin said. "And if it can help Robbie, John, Trip and everyone at Second Stage Theatre, all the better."

Rifkin will join a cast featuring Halley Feiffer (The House of Blue Leaves), Daniel Eric Gold (Ugly Betty), Carter Hudson (The Whipping Man), and Charlayne Woodard (Ain't Misbehavin'). Trip Cullman directs.
