Shlomo Carlebach Musical Soul Doctor Will Play Broadway’s Circle in the Square This Summer

The “Journey of a Rockstar Rabbi” will begin performances July 17.

Following a sold-out run off-Broadway in the summer of 2012, the new musical Soul Doctor, about the life of “Rock Star” Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, will move to Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre this summer. Performances begin on July 17 in advance of an August 15 opening.

Subtitled “Journey of a Rockstar Rabbi,” the musical, featuring a book and direction by Daniel S. Wise, follows Carlebach’s life starting with his escape from Nazi Germany to his friendship with jazz singer Nina Simone to his rise to fame as a musician in the 1960s playing with the likes of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. Thirty of Carlebach’s songs provide the score, with music by the “Rock Star” Rabbi himself and lyrics by David Schechter.

Casting for the production has not yet been announced. The Off-Broadway staging, which played a three-week guest run at New York Theatre Workshop, starred Eric Anderson as Shlomo Carlebach, Erica Ash as Nina Simone, Meredith Kaye Clarke, Ryan Strand, Kenny Morris, Rachel Stern, Dionne Figgins, Ryan Duncan, and Julia Osborne. The creative team includes Neil Patel (scenic design), Maggie Morgan (costume design), Jeff Croiter (lighting design), as well as John Shivers and David Patridge (sound design).

Tickets for the Broadway production are on sale now.
