New York Drama Critics’ Circle Names Vanya Best Play, Matilda Musical of 2012-2013

The awards will be presented on May 13 at a cocktail party at 54 Below.

The New York Drama Critics’ Circle has named Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike the Best Play and Matlida the Best Musical of the 2012-2013 season. The selections were made at the organization’s 78th annual voting meeting on Friday, May 3 at the offices of Time Out New York. Special citations were awarded to scenic designer John Lee Beatty, New York City Center Encores!, and Soho Rep.

The awards will be presented at a cocktail reception on May 13 at 54 Below, to be hosted by Cinderella stars Peter Bartlett and Harriet Harris. The award for best play comes with a $2500 prize made possible by a grant from the Lucille Lortel Foundation.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike opened at Lincoln Center Theater’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater in November 2012 before transferring to Broadway’s John Golden Theatre, where it opened on March 14. The play was previously seen at New Jersey’s McCarter Theatre Center. Matilda, which features a book by Dennis Kelly and a score by Tim Minchin is based on the novel by Roald Dahl. It opened at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre on April 11, 2013 and had its world premiere in 2010 at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The New York Drama Critics’ Circle is comprised of 26 drama critics from daily newspapers, magazines, wire services, and websites based in the New York metropolitan area. Adam Feldman of Time Out New York serves as president, with the New York Post’s Elisabeth Vincentelli as vice president, and Joe Dziemianowicz of the Daily News as treasurer.
