Jewish Plays Project Takes New Plays “Out for a Spin” in OPEN, the Initiative’s Second Annual Residency of New Works
Artistic Director David Winitsky and Creative Producer Jenny Levison of the Jewish Plays Project have announced the lineup of ten readings and two workshops slated for its second annual residency of new works, entitled OPEN. The presentations will take place between June 10 and June 30 at the 14th Street Y and will be performed as two series: Series A, which will feature plays Winitsky says are “ready for production” and Series B, which “takes newer plays out for a spin.”
Among the playwrights to be featured during the residency are Brooke Berman (Second Stage, Primary Stages), Adam Kraar (New Group, Playwrights Center), Jonathan Caren (Rattlestick, Old Globe), and Gary Winter (13P, The Flea). Their plays were chosen through the JPP’s International Jewish Playwriting Contest. A panel of 45 artists conducted initial reviews of the works, which were then taken to be performed in Jewish communities throughout the northeast and selected via a live audience vote. David Rush’s 2013 contest-winning play Estelle Singerman will be the final presentation of the residency, with performances scheduled for June 29 and 30.
