Fiona Shaw, Questlove, Filter Theatre, and More Set for BAM’s 2013 Next Wave Festival

The Brooklyn Academy of Music has announced the programming planned for the 2013 Next Wave Festival, which will run September 17-December 22. The festivities will include opera, theater, music, and dance performances.
Theatrical offerings will include the New York premiere of Ex Machina’s The Blue Dragon (September 18-21), the sequel to Robert Lepage’s The Dragons’ Trilogy; Pick Up Performance Co(s)’ new play by Ain Gordon, Not What Happened (September 25-28); Zimmermann & de Perrot’s Hans was Heiri (October 23-26); TR Warszawa’s Nosferatu (October 30-November 2), inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula; Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz’s take on Henrik Ibsen’s Enemy of the People (November 6-9); Alexandre Singh’s The Humans (November 13-16); Filter Theatre & Lyric Hammersmith’s new play about the environment, Water (November 13-16); Lemieux Pilon 4D Art’s La Belle et la Bête (November 21-23); Bodycast from Suzanne Bocanegra, Frances McDormand, and Paul Lazar (December 3-7); Fiona Shaw and Phyllida Lloyd’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (December 10-22), and A Piece of Work by Annie Dorsen (December 18-21).
Highlights from the festival’s opera, dance, and music offerings include the U.S. premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage and Richard Thomas’ Anna Nicole, a bittersweet opera based on the life of Anna Nicole Smith. The production will kick off the festival September 17-28. In addition, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson will present a freely associative and impressionistic musical homage to pioneers in the electronic music scene between 1948 and 1979, entitled Electronium: The Future Was Then, which will run October 25-26. Polish avant-garde music group Karbido will make their New York debut with the award-winning sound work The Table from September 19-21.
