The New York Pops celebrated its 29th birthday with a gala concert titled Journey On honoring Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty on Monday, April 30 at Carnegie Hall. A sit-down dinner was held following the concert at the Plaza Hotel.
The program consisted of selections from the various musicals Ahrens and Flaherty have composed, including Ragtime, A Man of No Importance, and Seussical. Many of the songs were performed by those who originally sang them on and Off-Broadway. The Pops Orchestra was conducted by Steven Reineke.
Performers included Liz Callaway (who sang “Journey to the Past” from the film Anastasia), Kevin Chamberlin (who sang “Alone in the Universe” from Seussical), LaChanze, Jason Danieley, Boyd Gaines, Lewis Grosso, Brian d’Arcy James, Nikki M. James, Kecia Lewis-Evans, Norm Lewis (who closed the program with James singing “Wheels of a Dream,” from Ragtime), Darlene Love, Marin Mazzie (who sang “Back to Before” from Ragtime and duetted with husband Danieley on “Our Children”), Terrence McNally, Tiler Peck, Andrew Rannells, and Rachel York.
