The Shaggs’ Philosophy of the World Now Available on Remastered CD

The Shaggs’ 1969 album Philosophy of the World has been reissued in a private-label recording by Playwrights Horizons and New York Theatre Workshop in tandem with the companies’ co-production of the new musical The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World, running at Playwrights Horizons. The new CD is available for purchase at the theater and through the theater’s website.

Formed in 1968, the all-female rock group The Shaggs was composed of sisters Dorothy “Dot” Wiggin (vocals/lead guitar), Betty Wiggin (vocals/rhythm guitar) and Helen Wiggin (drums). Produced by Austin Wiggin, Jr. and The Shaggs,

Philosophy of the World was originally recorded on March 9, 1969 at Fleetwood Studios in Revere, MA. The new disc includes a booklet that features not only all of the original music and liner notes, but also new liner notes by Joy Gregory, bookwriter and co-lyricist for the musical.

The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World features music by Gunnar Madsen, lyrics by Gregory and Madsen, and story by Gregory, Madsen and John Langs, with direction by Langs. The cast includes Kevin Cahoon, Peter Friedman, Annie Golden, Jamey Hood, Steve Routman, Cory Michael Smith, Sarah Sokolovic, and Emily Walton.
