Marin Mazzie and Molly Ranson will star in a new production of the infamous musical Carrie for MCC Theater, to be directed by Stafford Arima, beginning January 31, 2012.

Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, the musical features a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, music by Michael Gore, and lyrics by Dean Pitchford. This version of Carrie has been reworked and fully re-imagined by Arima and the show’s original authors, and is set today, in the small town of Chamberlain, Maine. It centers on Carrie White (Ranson), an outcast who’s bullied by the popular crowd, and at the mercy of her loving but cruelly over-protective mother (Mazzie). But Carrie’s just discovered she’s got a special power, and if pushed too far, she’s not afraid to use it.

The production will feature orchestrations by Doug Besterman, vocal design by AnnMarie Milazzo, music direction/arrangements by Mary-Mitchell Campbell, and choreography by Matt Williams.

MCC’s 2011-2012 season will also include the world premieres of Jeff Talbott’s The Submission (September 8-October 16), directed by Walter Bobbie, about a white male playwright who creates a black female nom-de-plume, and Thomas Higgins’ Wild Animals You Should Know (November 3-December 11), directed by Trip Cullman, and about two teenage boys locked in an innocently erotic game of cat and mouse.
