Lauren Velez will reprise her performance as Cuban musical sensation La Lupe in They Call Me La Lupe on June 4 at 7pm at Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture. Veronica Caicedo has directed the production, which will be the opening presentation of the 5th annual TeatroStageFest.

Written by Emmy winner James Manos, Jr. and Luis Caballero, the show tells La Lupe’s rags to riches life story. Velez is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Lt. Maria Laguerta on Showtime’s Dexter.

Other offerings in the Festival, which will run June 4-18 in various venues, will include performances by Limón Dance Company offering a revival of Maestro Limón’s adaptation of The Emperor Jones, inspired by Eugene O’Neill’s play, with original music by Heitor Villa-Lobos; Karina Casiano’s The Orphans, a post-apocalyptic love story, which will feature the author and Renzo Ampuero; Quijote, a puppet-filled interpretation of Cervantes’ classic from spains Bambalinas; and playwright/director Manuela Infante’s What’s He Building in There?, an exploration of a single instant of magic that questions the images that shape perception.

In addition, Inma Heredia’s My Audition with Almodóvar will be presented for three performances during the Festival as well as Pregones Theater’s celebration of poet and storytell Magdalena Gomez’s writing, Dancing in my Cockroach Killers.
