John Malkovich, John Hurt, Ivo van Hove, Robert Wilson, et al. Part of BAM’s 2011 Next Wave Festival

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) has announced its programming for the 2011 Next Wave Festival.

Among the theater offerings in the Festival will be the Berliner Ensemble’s production of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera (October 4-8), directed by Robert Wilson and Toneelgroep Amsterdam’s Cries and Whispers (October 25-29), a piece based on Ingmar Bergman’s film of the same name, which is directed by Ivo van Hove.

The Next Wave Festival will also include Sulayman Al-Bassam’s The Speaker’s Progress (October 6-8), which centers on a once-radical theater producer who has become a regime apologist; Phantom Limb’s investigation of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expeditions, 69°S (November 2-5), which has music by Erik Sanko and direction by Sophie Hunter; Michael Sturminger’s crime drama cum Baroque opera, The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a serial killer (November 17-19), which features John Malkovich; and Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape (December 6-17, starring John Hurt in a production directed by Michael Colgan for Dublin’s Gate Theatre.

Dance will be represented in the Festival with performances by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, the Beijing Dance Theatre, the Forsythe Company, and Merce Cunningham Dance Company, in addition to a new piece from Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar, as well as one by John Jasperse.

Musical offerings will include Awakening: A Musical Meditation on the Anniversary of 9/11 (September 21-24), delivered by the Kronos Quartet and featuring the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and Brooklyn Babylon (November 9-12), a collaboration between composer Darcy Jame Argue and graphic artist Danijel Zezelj; as well as a piece by Daniel Bernard Roumain and a two-night engagement of Tudo Isto E Fado, which explores Portugal’s soulful national song style.
