Drama Desk Award Winners Announced

The 2011 Drama Desk Awards — honoring outstanding work on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway — were presented at a ceremony held at Hammerstein Ballroom on Monday, May 23. Harvey Fierstein hosted the ceremony.

The Book of Mormon won the Outstanding Musical Category, while War Horse won for Outstanding Play. Among the acting winners were Brian Bedford, Laura Benanti, Norbert Leo Butz, Bobby Cannavale, Edie Falco, Sutton Foster, Frances McDormand, and John Larroquette.

In addition to the competitive categories, the Drama Desk is honoring the ensemble casts of In Transit (Steve French, Celisse Henderson, Hannah Laird, Chesney Snow, Graham Stevens, Denise Summerford, and Tommar Wilson) and The Normal Heart (Ellen Barkin, Patrick Breen, Mark Harelik, John Benjamin Hickey, Luke, Joe Mantello, Lee Pace, Jim Parsons, Richard Topol, and Wayne Alan Wilcox).

In addition, special awards are being given to playwright A.R. Gurney, actor Reed Birney, The New Group and its Artistic Director Scott Elliott, The Pearl Theatre Company, and the creative team of War Horse (Paule Constable, Marianne Elliott, 59 Productions, Adrian Kohler with Basil Jones for Handspring Puppet Company, Tom Morris, Rae Smith, Christopher Shutt, Toby Sedgwick, Adrian Sutton and John Tams).
