Leigh Silverman to Direct Readings of David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish

Leigh Silverman will direct a reading of David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish, to be offered June 10 & 11 at 7pm at The Lark Play Development Center. The presentation is being offered in association with the Public Theater.

Hwang’s play focuses on a non-Chinese American businessman, who, seeking to make a deal in a provincial Chinese capital, falls into an extra-marital affair with a female Chinese official, despite their language differences. The production will be performed in English and Mandarin with projected translations.

Hwang won the Tony Award for M. Butterfly, and was Tony-nominated for Golden Child and the revised book for the Broadway revival of Flower Drum Song. He was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist for both M. Butterfly and Yellow Face, and received an Obie Award for the latter, also directed by Silverman.
