Playwright Adam Rapp, along with Joan E. Bertin, Executive Director of the National Coalition Against Censorship, and NYU associate professor Brett Gary, will take part in the panel discussion entitled The Real Story Behind ‘The Metal Children:’ Censorship and Literature at Barnes & Noble Union Square on June 11. Jeremy McCarter will moderate the discussion.

The conversation will focus on Rapp’s experiences when the Muhlenberg High School’s school board confiscated and removed his young adult novel The Buffalo Tree from the curriculum in 2005 and his play The Metal Children, which has been inspired by this event. In addition, the panelists will consider the larger implications of censoring literature both in the classroom and beyond.

The Metal Children is currently playing at the Vineyard Theatre. Directed by Rapp, the company features Betsy Aidem, , Connor Barrett, Susan Blommaert, Guy Boyd, Billy Crudup, David Greenspan, Halley Wegryn Gross, Jessy Hodges, and Phoebe Strole.
