Eddie Izzard will assume the role of Jack Lawson in David Mamet’s Race, playing at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway. He will be replacing James Spader who will, as previously reported, depart the company on June 20.

Izzard received a Tony Award nomination for the Roundabout Theatre’s revival of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, and his other stage credits include Lenny and David Mamet’s The Cryptogram. His film and television credits include The Riches, Velvet Goldmine, Shadow of the Vampire, The Cat’s Meow, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, and Across the Universe.

The play, directed by Mamet, features three attorneys, two black and one white, who are offered a chance to defend a white man charged with a crime against a black woman. Izzard will join the previously announced Afton C. Williamson (beginning June 15) and Dennis Haysbert (beginning June 21) and continuing cast member Richard Thomas in the production, which is scheduled to run through August 21.

The production features sets by Santo Loquasto, lighting design by Brian Macdevitt, and costumes by Tom Broecker. As recently reported, the play recouped its investment.
