The cast of Wendy Kesselman’s Off-Broadway musical The Black Monk, which played the Samuel Beckett Theatre earlier this season, will record an original cast album on May 25. The recording will be released on iTunes in the fall, and a record deal is pending.

The show, inspired by Anton Chekhov’s story of the same name, follows the life of a gifted young artist who returns home after five years in Moscow to his adopted father and his childhood love, but is tempted by the power of the mysterious Black Monk.

The cast includes Austin Pendleton, Elon Rutberg, Julie Craig, and Scott Robertson. The production was directed by Kevin Newbury, with musical direction by Chris Berg (with cellist Arthur Cook). The album will be produced/engineered by Grammy Award winner John Kilgore.
