Playwright Lawrence Roman Dies at 86

Playwright Lawrence Roman, best known for 1960’s Under the Yum Yum Tree, died of complications from kidney failure on May 25 in California, according to The Los Angeles Times. He was 86.

Under the Yum Yum Tree, which had a nearly 175-performance run on Broadway, concerned a landlord who tries to seduce his tenant; the production starred Gig Young, Sandra Church, and Dean Jones. A 1963 film version starred Jack Lemmon, Carol Lynley, and Jones.

He had two other plays on Broadway: 1964’s P.S. I Love You, starring Geraldine Page, and 1984’s Alone Together, starring Kevin McCarthy and Janis Paige.

Roman also wrote numerous screenplays and teleplays during his career, including A Kiss Before Dying, Paper Lion, McQ, and The Ernest Green Story.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn, daughter Catherine, and son Steve.
