Lupone, Catered Affair, August, South Pacific, Macbeth Receive Drama League Awards

The 2008 Drama League Awards were presented this afternoon at a luncheon held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, hosted by Harvey Fierstein.

The musical A Catered Affair took the prize for Distinguished Production of a Musical; August: Osage County won for Distinguished Production of a Play; South Pacific was honored for Distinguished Revival of a Musical; Macbeth won for Distinguished Revival of a Play; and Patti LuPone received the Distinguished Performance Award for her work in Gypsy.

Three previously announced special awards were also given out to famed conductor Paul Gemignani, best known for his work with Stephen Sondheim, who received the Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre Award; Bartlett Sher, currently represented on Broadway by Lincoln Center Theater’s revival of South Pacific, was honored with the Julia Hansen Award for Excellence in Directing; and La MaMa E.T.C. founder Ellen Stewart was given the Unique Contribution to Theatre Award.
