Denham, Durning, Foote, Smith, Wilmot, et al. Win 2006 Lucille Lortel Awards

The Signature Theatre Company’s revival of The Trip to Bountiful and the New York Theatre Workshop’s production of Will Power’s musical The Seven were the big winners at the 2006 Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway. The annual honors were presented on Monday, May 1 at New World Stages.

The event was hosted by Judy Gold and Brían F. O’Byrne. It featured appearances by Dominic Chianese, Margaret Colin, Veanne Cox, Michael Cumpsty, Josh Hamilton, Doug Hughes, Carol Kane, Stephen Lang, Craig Lucas, Wendie Malick, Logan Marshall-Green, Mark Moses, Bebe Neuwirth, Keith Nobbs, Paul Rudd, Daniel Sunjata, David Zayas, Liza Colon-Zayas, and the cast of Altar Boyz. In addition, members of the casts of the four nominated musicals performed, and Joan Allen and Peter Friedman read the final scene from the late Wendy Wasserstein’s The Heidi Chronicles.

The Trip to Bountiful took home four awards, including Outstanding Revival, Director, and Lead Actress (Lois Smith). The Seven won three awards, including Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Choreography (Bill T. Jones). Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore was named Outstanding Play, and its star David Wilmot tied for Outstanding Lead Actor with Red Light Winter‘s Christopher Denham.

A Lifetime Achievement award was given posthumously to Wasserstein. Other special honors went to John Patrick Shanley (Playwrights’ Sidewalk inductee), theater historian Betty Corwin (Edith Oliver Award for Sustained Excellence), and the Atlantic Theater Company (Outstanding Body of Work).
