Tony-Nominated Costume Designer Carrie Robbins Pens Two One-Act Plays for HERE Arts Center

Two-time Tony-nominated costume designer Carrie Robbins (Irving Berlin's White Christmas, Grease) will put on her playwriting hat this spring with the world premiere of two one-act plays, Sawbones and The Diamond Eater, running off-Broadway from May 21-June 7 at HERE Arts Center. The official opening is scheduled for May 22.
Directed by Tazewell Thompson, Sawbones and The Diamond Eater are one-act historical dramas based on true events captured in the short stories of the late R.D. Robbins, a New York surgeon who became a fiction writer during the final years of his life. He became a much-published author and four-time PushCart Prize nominee for excellence in short story writing.
Sawbones is set in a Civil War Field Hospital in Virginia in 1862 and depicts the events that follow after a freeman of color brings in a teenage Rebel requiring immediate attention for his shattered leg. The Diamond Eater is based on a true story as told to R.D. Robbins. It takes place in a German camp in 1945 where a senior squad leader enlists a Jewish surgeon to transplant a gypsy's kidney into a Jew as an experiment to determine if the Jew will survive.
The casts of the plays include Wynn Harmon, Eric Kuttner, Thomas Leverton, Tony Naumovski, Lynn Writght, Gregory Marlow, Alexander Salamat, and Jenny Vath.
The creative team features scenic design by Brandon McNeel, lighting design by Jorge Arroyo, projection design by Robert Figueira, sound design by Erik T. Lawson, and Robbins supplying her own costume design.
