Leslie Odom Jr., best known for his role on the Broadway-themed NBC series Smash, will join Tony Award winners Lin-Manuel Miranda and Karen Olivo in tick, tick… BOOM! this summer. The production kicks off the Encores! Off-Center series, which celebrates landmark off-Broadway musicals. The show will offer five performances from June 25-28 at New York City Center.
tick, tick… BOOM! features a book, music, and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Jonathan Larson (Rent), with vocal arrangements and orchestrations by Stephen Oremus. David Auburn is script consultant.
The autobiographical musical was first performed as a solo rock monologue by Larson in 1990. The story follows an aspiring writer who questions his life choices on the eve of his 30th birthday. The show was revamped by David Auburn after Larson's death and was mounted off-Broadway in June 2001 at the Jane Street Theatre as a three-actor musical, featuring Raúl Esparza in the lead role of Jon. The cast of the 2005 London production was led by Neil Patrick Harris.
The upcoming Encores! production will be directed by Oliver Butler, with choreography by Camille A. Brown and music direction by Chris Fenwick.
