Legendary musicians Stephen Sondheim and Wynton Marsalis will collaborate on the new musical event, A Bed and a Chair: A New York Love Story, to be presented by New York City Center Encores! November 13-17.

The new work, which fuses together Encores! and Jazz at Lincoln Center, features Sondheim's music arranged and performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Directed by frequent Sondheim collaborator John Doyle and conceived by Peter Gethers, Jack Viertel, and Doyle, A Bed and a Chair celebrates love in and of New York. More than two dozen Sondheim compositions will be reimagined by the musical stylings of Marsalis, with singers drawn from the worlds of Broadway and Jazz.

A Bed and a Chair is the second production of the City Center/Jazz at Lincoln Center producing partnership, which began with the acclaimed Duke Ellington revue Cotton Club Parade, which premiered in 2011, played a return engagement in 2012, and is expected to open on Broadway in the 2013-2014 season.

Sondheim contributed lyrics to the landmark musicals West Side Story and Gypsy and is the composer-lyricist of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Follies, Sunday in the Park With George, Sweeney Todd, Passion, and others. Nine-time Grammy Award winner Marsalis has recorded more than 70 jazz and classical albums, and serves as musical director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
