The long-awaited opening of the critically acclaimed across-the-pond musical has finally arrived. Matilda The Musical, will celebrate its opening this evening at the Shubert Theatre before its critical fate is finally revealed.

Based on the beloved children's novel by Roald Dahl, the musical features a score by Tim Minchin and a book by Dennis Kelly. It stars original London cast member Bertie Carvel as Miss Trunchbull, as well as Lauren Ward in the role of Miss Honey and a quartet of leading young ladies: Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Bailey Ryon, and Milly Shapiro, all of whom share the title role.

Though audiences typically do not know which Matilda they will see on any given night, opening night on Broadway is not a box of chocolates. Sophia Gennusa was the randomly selected winner of the opening night performance following a name drawing at Sardi's restaurant on April 3.

After receiving a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards during its West End run, Broadway has high hopes for this new musical. Check in tomorrow for TheaterMania's review and opening night photos!
