Gayfest, a not-for-profit New York City arts organization dedicated to developing LGBT and other minority works for the stage, film, and television, has announced the lineup for its fifth biennial festival of plays.
The festival will open on May 23 with Scott C. Sickles' Moonlight Love Songs, scheduled to run through June 2 at the June Havoc Theatre. Directed by Steven Petrillo, the play is described as charting a romance that "explodes into deception and public outrage."
Following Moonlight Love Songs at the June Havoc Theatre from June 6-16 will be The Loves of Mr. Lincoln, a play by David Brendan Hopes. "Abraham Lincoln loved his wife, his children, the Union, the United States of America…and Joshua Speed" is the play's intriguing self description. Sidney J. Burgoyne will direct.
Rounding out the festival will be a special presentation of Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde at the Dorothy Strelsin Theatre, running from May 30-June 16. A 1997 work by Moisés Kaufman, the play deals with Oscar Wilde's charges of "committing acts of gross indecency with other male persons" following his three trials on the matter of his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas. The play incorporates real excerpts from the trials' various transcripts. Zi Alikhan plans to direct the production.
